Pickleball Lingo 101: Speak Like a Pro on the Court
Share
Whether you’re new to pickleball or just brushing up on your skills, learning the lingo can make the game even more fun. Here’s a quick guide to some common terms you’ll hear on the court. Rain City Paddle Co. is here to help make sense of it all.
1. Kitchen – No, it’s not where you grab a snack! The “kitchen” is the non-volley zone near the net. You can’t hit the ball here unless it bounces first.
2. Dink – A soft, controlled shot that lands in the opponent’s kitchen. Dinking is all about finesse, not power.
3. Paddle – The essential tool of the trade. Lightweight and solid, it’s your trusty sidekick for every serve, smash, and dink.
4. Ace – A serve that your opponent can’t touch. Sweet and satisfying!
5. Smash / Overhead – The power play! When the ball is high, hit it hard down into your opponent’s court.
6. Third Shot Drop – A strategic shot that softens your third hit, ideally landing in the kitchen to set up a rally.
7. Lob – A high shot aimed over your opponent’s head, forcing them to retreat. Timing is everything.
Pickleball is as much about strategy as it is about fun, and knowing the lingo will help you feel confident on the court. Next time you hear someone call a “dink” or “smash,” you’ll know exactly what’s happening!
